Step-by-Step Bath Time Routine for Your Baby

Are you a first-time parent and afraid of giving your baby their first bath time? Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to give your baby a bath safely so you both enjoy it.

How often should you bathe your baby?

To avoid drying out your baby’s skin, bathe them 2 to 3 times a week. On days when you’re not bathing them, you can do quick washes in between diaper changes.

Each bath shouldn’t take longer than 5 to 10 minutes, especially for babies with more sensitive skin.

When should you bathe your baby?

There isn’t really a rule for that, but don’t bathe them when they’re hungry or right after eating. Afternoon or evening baths are often recommended to get your baby ready and relaxed for bed. The best bath time is when you’re not in a rush and won’t be interrupted, so you can keep an eye on your baby and spend quality time together.

Step 1: Fill your baby’s bath with lukewarm water (body temperature): not too cold that the baby gets cold and not too hot, so the baby doesn’t get too warm and their skin doesn't get irritated.
You can test the water on your wrist to make sure it’s good.

Step 2: Hold your baby’s head and neck firmly and safely out of the water as you lower them into their bath.

Step 3: Use a small container (a plastic or silicone scoop, bowl, …) to wet your baby’s hair. Make sure you’re scooping the water to the other side of their face.

Step 4: You only need a small chickpea-sized amount of NIVEA BABY Pure & Mild Shampoo to wash your baby’s hair.

Slowly massage it into the hair. Remember, a baby’s skull and scalp are very malleable and sensitive when they’re first born, so it’s important to care for them gently. At this point, you should have some foam. Babies love to play with the foam, just be careful of them eating it.

Step 5: Rinse out the shampoo gently while scooping warm water while your baby’s head is tilted slightly backward and massage it gently to remove any remnants of shampoo.

Step 6
: Use a soft washcloth to clean your baby’s body, leaving their bottom till the end.

Once you’re done, wrap them in a warm towel and you can now give your clean baby all the hugs and kisses you want. Now you can enjoy bath time with your baby and take care of yourself too!
